Franz Josef Land is at the very end of the world: just 900 km off the north pole, completely ice covered islands with vivid sea fauna. Late August 2012 the arctic polar sea ice was at its lowest record since NASA observations and the archipelago was totally sea ice free so that we reached 83 degree north with the ice class A vessel Ortelius in search of compact ice floes and polar bears. This has never happened before! Watch the daily updated Norwegian sea ice report of the northern hemisphaere.

Chasing Ice North of Franz Josef Land, Part 1: In summer 2012 the Arctic Ocean had lost its sea ice cover to a never before recorded degree which was commented by NASA as a sign for a 'fundamental change'. I witnessed this extraordinary condition on a trip to Franz Josef Land where we could sail with the ice class A vessel 'Ortelius' up to 83° north into the nearly ice free Arctic Ocean - supposedly never reached before by a non ice breaker. Take the time for a trip into the Russian High Arctic. 'Chasing Ice North of Franz Josef Land' available also on YouTube under http://youtu.be/rLe4v3jMNIw (27 min.).
