About the book

Frozen Latitudes is an extraordinary fine art photo book from the landscape photographer Christoph Ruhsam, published by Seltmann und Söhne, Berlin. The book presents on 288 pages breathtaking photos in the panoramic format 30 x 23,5 cm, highlighting the beauty of High Arctic Landscapes of Greenland, Franz Josef Land and the Arctic Ocean due to its scantiness and reduction to essential forms. In five of the six chapters in English and in German the author tells touching stories about his first hand Arctic experiences over 30 years and takes the reader in an authentic way into the spheres of the Frozen Latitudes with insights how they have changed due to global warming. The last chapter is written by Professor Dr. Wolfgang Schöner, the international renown Austrian scientist specialized on Arctic climates and glaciology and is directory of the Austrian Polar Research Institute APRI. It explains in an excellent way the background and the impact of global warming on snow and ice of the Arctic using latest data.

Inner Goal

„Our internal goal, which guided the external goal of looking for possible routes, was strongly influenced by the yearning for pristine landscapes, untouched by humans. The harsh beauty of the Arctic landscape, with its barren nature, should resonate at a deeper level and even touch our souls. Actually, we were looking for the permanent in the changing forms or for the eternal in the transient. Contemplating the landscape which is being shaped by ice through the enormous forces of cryogenesis, virtual Frozen Morphs emerged – visions of the morphology of frozen landscapes – which became a reality through our experiences. Comparable to the desert experiences of the ancient Christian hermits hundreds of years ago, our image of Frozen Latitudes was complemented by a spiritual dimension: how is each of us going to deal with loneliness and absolute self-reliance?“

Dr. Christoph Ruhsam is a passionate landscape photographer who has specialized over decades in the Arctic and the cryosphere. He is media officer of the Austrian Polar Research Institute APRI.

„Unser inneres Ziel, das dem äußeren Ziel im Suchen nach möglichen Routen die Richtung gab, war stark von der Sehnsucht nach unberührter, von Menschen nicht veränderter Landschaft geprägt. Die Ästhetik arktischer Landschaft mit ihrer Kargheit und Reduktion auf das Wesentliche sollte in der Tiefe unserer Seelen Platz finden. Wir suchten gewissermaßen nach dem Dauerhaften hinter der vergänglichen Form oder nach dem Unvergänglichen im Vergänglichen. Durch unsere Vorstellung über die Entstehung von Eiszeitlandschaften unter den enormen Kräften der Kryogenesis entstanden virtuelle Frozen Morphs – Visionen über die Morphologie gefrorener Landschaften – die durch die Erfahrungen zur Realität wurden. Vergleichbar mit den Wüstenerfahrungen früher christlicher Einsiedlermönche vor hunderten von Jahren ergänzte sich unser Bild von Frozen Latitudes mit einer spirituellen Dimension: Wie geht jeder von uns mit der Erfahrung von Einsamkeit und absolutem Auf-sich-gestellt-Sein um?“
